Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah Ta’ala)
Khutba Jumma(21-08-2009) by
Peerzada Dr Haroon-ur-Rashid Kashmiri
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Allah Paak Jallashanahu says in surah Al-Baqarah 2, verse: 152………
“Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying,). I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me.” (152)
Today I will talk about Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah Ta’ala).
Allah Paak Jallashanahu says in surah Al-Ra’d 13, verse: 28…….
“Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allâh, Verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest” (28)
Allah Paak Jallashanahu says in Holy Qur’an that His creations are engaged in His remembrance and praise. Thus in surah Al-Hashr 59, verse:1, it is stated:
سَبَّحَ لِلّٰهِ مَا فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِى الۡاَرۡضِۚ وَهُوَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡحَكِيۡمُ ﴿۱﴾
“Whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is on the earth glorifies Allâh. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” (1)
Remembrance has a significant role in human life. Not only our routine works depend upon remembrance but we also try to remember and follow moral values. There is another prospectus of remembrance. You remember more whom you like or love. Islam lays great emphasis on extreme love and passion for Allah Paak Jallashanahu and Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam).
Allah Paak Jallashanahu says in Surah al-Tawba 9, verse:24…..
“ Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you delight are dearer to you than Allâh and His Messenger, and striving hard and fighting in His Cause, then wait until Allâh brings about His Decision (torment, suffering). And Allâh guides not the people who are Al-Fâsiqûn (the rebellious, disobedient to Allâh).” (24)
This verse tells us about the disobedient people. Who are they? ……..
If your family, wealth and business are keeping you away from the cause of Allah Paak Jallashanahu and Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam), if you have time for your family and business but you don’t have time to pray, to come for Jumma; you are disobedient. It is Allah’s decision that He will not guide disobedient people. Thus, a strong relationship of love with Allah Paak Jallashanahu and Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam) forms the basis of our faith. For example, a person loves his wife. He will do anything for her just to please her. He can take time out for her whether day or night. He can spend whole night waking up for her. But when it comes to Allah, he does not have time to meet Allah, to pray, to prostrate before Allah Ta’ala. Unfortunately, this is the condition of most of the Muslims now-a-days. If you cannot love more, at least love Allah ta’ala proportionate to that for your wife.
Only human beings and jinn are given freedom of choice to submit to Allah’s Will or to follow their own desires. What is the difference between Muslims and non-Muslims? ….. Muslims remember Allah Paak Jallashanahu and prostrate before Him in submission. That’s why, the rate of depression is much less in Muslims. A person engaged in remembrance of Allah Paak Jallashanahu (Dhikr) will never be depressed; will never loose the hope in life. He will have peace and satisfaction in his heart. Insha’Allah.
Shaytaan (satan) always attempt to make us forget Allah Paak Jallashanahu and Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam). Allah Paak Jallashanahu says in surah al-Mujadila 58, verse: 19.
“Shaitân (Satan) has overpowered them. So he has made them forget the remembrance of Allâh. They are the party of Shaitân (Satan). Verily, it is the party of Shaitân (Satan) that will be the losers!” (19)
So we have to protect ourselves from Shaytaan. We should ensure that we love Allah Paak Jallashanahu and Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam) the most, thus fulfilling Allah’s command:
Allah Paak Jallashanahu says in surah al-Ahzaab 33, verse: 41
“ O you who believe! Remember Allâh with much remembrance.” (41)
The Dhikr should be with humbleness and respect whether sitting, standing or lying down. But it’s better to perform ablution and sit as you sit for the prayer, facing towards Khana Ka’aba. Allah Paak Jallashanahu says in surah Aal-e-Imran 3, verse:191
Those who remember Allah while standing , sitting, and lying on their sides" (191)
So you are allowed to do Dhikr in any posture. Dhikr can be done loudly or silently in the heart. There is no time restriction. You can do Dhikr at any time of the day or the night. There is no limit for Dhikr. In all other ibaadah, there is restriction, for example, you pray 5 times a day, you fast in Ramadan, you pay Zakah once a year. You cannot pray more than 5 times a day (Obligatory prayers), you cannot pay Zakah twice in a year. But you can do Dhikr whenever you want.
Similarly, Allah Paak Jallashanahu says in surah al-Jum’ah 62, verse: 10
Then when the (Jumu'ah) Salât (prayer) is ended, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allâh (by working, etc.), and remember Allâh much, that you may be successful.”
Only hypocrites do not remember Allah Paak Jallashanahu and Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam) and pray to show off others. Allah Paak Jallashanahu says in surah al-Nisaa 4, verse: 142
“Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allâh, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salât (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allâh but little.” (142)
You should be aware of meanings of Dhikr, whichever Dhikr you are doing. You should concentrate and focus towards Allah Paak Jallashanahu while doing Dikhr. For example, when you are reciting Subhan Allah, you should know that you are praising Allah Ta’ala. Similarly when you are reciting Alhamdulillah, you should know that He is the only one who is entitled to be praised. All praises are for Allah Paak Jallashanahu.
Hadhrat Jabir (Radi Allahu anhu) narrates that Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam) said: "The best remembrance of Allah is to repeat la ilaha illallah and the best prayer (du'a) is Alhamdulillah (all praise belongs to Allah)." (Narrated by Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, and Hakim who declared its chain sound)
Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam) said that Allah Ta'ala has angels roaming the roads to find the people of dhikr, i.e. those who say La Ilaha Illallah and similar expressions, and when they find a group of people (qawm) reciting Dhikr, they call each other and cover them in layers until the first heaven -- the location of which is in Allah's knowledge. (Bukhari and Muslim)
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (Radi’Allah’Ta’ala Anhu) narrates that Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam) said, “(Allah Ta’ala says) I am as My servants expects Me to be. I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in his heart, I remember him to Myself; and if he remembers me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly better than this. And if he draws near to Me a hand’s span, I draw near him an arm’s length; and if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a fathom’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed. (Bukhari and Muslim)
Thus, silent Dhikr is differentiated from dhikr said out loud by His saying: "Remembers Me within himself," meaning: "silently," and "in an assembly," meaning "aloud."
Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam) said: hatta yaqulu majnun "Remember Allah Ta'ala as much as you want, until people say that you are crazy and foolish" (Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad, Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, and al-Hakim who declared it sahih)
You should engage yourself in Dhikr as much as possible because if you remember Allah Paak Jallashanahu, He remembers you and if you remember him in a gathering, He remembers you in a better gathering of angels.
There are many Adhkaar which you can get from any book of Adhkaar. A few are:
Ya Haeeyo Ya Qaeeyum
Ya Allah Ya Rehman Ya Raheem (or any attributed names for Allah Ta’ala)
La ilaha Illalahu
Subhan Allah wabe hamdehi Subhan Allah hil azeem
Or you can simply recite Allah, Allah, Allah.
You can teach this to your kids, even 2-3 years old.
You can consult any Adhkaar book for long Adhkaar.
May Allah Paak Jallashanahu give us the divine guidance to remember Him excessively!
May Allah Paak Jallashanahu close our eyes for pretty ones, worldly things and open our eyes for the Best & He (Allah) is the Best & Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wasallam) is the best among His creations.
Wa ma alaiyna illal balaghul mobeen.
